Music and Musing

by MBG

· In our world today, we are bombarded by media of all types.

· No other is least understood or as widespread as music.

1. What is Music? (Ephesians 5:19)

MUSIC is composed of three parts:

Melody – that’s the tune; one note at a time

Harmony – supports, or adds to the tune; multiple notes at a time

Rhythm – pace and/or intervals of music

A fourth can be added to this list

Lyrics – words that accompany the music

· None of these are simply evil, but all of them can be used for wrong purposes.

· The two of these which most often corrupt music are Lyrics and Rhythm.

2. Music is Musing!!! (Philippians 4:8)

Remember the root of the word "music" is "muse"!

Muse means:

  • To ponder; to think closely; to ponder in silence.
  • To be absent in mind; to be so occupied in study or contemplation, as not to observe passing scenes or things present.
  • To wonder
  • To think on; to meditate on.

  • Music does not control our mind and make us robots and slaves to its message, but it does affect our thought.
  • If you listen to music that promotes sin, you will start to think about that sin.
  • If someone hears you listening to wrong music, they will think you are like that music.
