The Protocols of the Elders of Zion was popular, anti-Semitic work that first appeared in Russia in 1903 and reached the United States by 1920 in an English translation. The book supposedly outlined a Jewish plot to control the entire world and it has been thoroughly discredited. However, it found a receptive audience
In this sermon and pamphlet published I think around 1938, J. Frank Norris defends the Jewish people and decries the acceptance of the Protocols by some those such as W.B. Riley I find this work is remarkable for a few reasons: first, it illustrates the fractured relationship between former allies Riley and Norris; second, it helps disprove the image of Norris being a K.K.K.-style racist; third, it is embodies the anti-communist patriotism that filled much of Norris’ ministry of that time; and fourth, there are just so many elements crammed into one address – world affairs, prophecy, history, patriotism, and so on. And to think that Norris was broadcasting this practically in the backyard of Henry Ford, who had paid for 500,000 copies of the Protocols to be printed! – MBG

THE UPHEAVAL IN PALESTINE AND WHAT IT MEANS TO THE REST OF THE WORLD

I spent this summer in Palestine and saw conditions first hand and had two interviews with the Grand Mufti, who a short time before had been unanimously elected as the Head of the Mohammedan world. He is a very powerful, shrewd, keen personality. I was in Palestine seventeen years ago.
The greatest trouble of this hour is not in the Orient or in Spain, but in Palestine. In that tiny country only 160 miles long and an average of 60 miles wide, or approximately 10,000 square miles, is wrapped up the destiny of the whole world. It is the home of three great religions – Judaism, Mohammedanism and Christianity.
The British Empire gave that land back to the Jews in what is known as the Balfour Declaration on November 2, 1917, which in one sentence reads as follows:
“His Majesty’s Government views with favor the establishment in Palestine of a National Home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of that object, it being understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by the Jews in any other country.”
There is in that land around a million Arabs and 400,000 Jews. The conflict that is now going on in Palestine is age long and world wide. Because of the persecution of the Jews in Russia, Germany, Poland, Romania and other European countries, the Jews have accepted the promise and guarantee of the British Government to return to them the land of their fathers.
It should be clearly borne in mind that the Jews of the world pinned their hopes on the Balfour declaration. Based upon this assurance life, blood and material means were not spared.
I know from first-hand knowledge from my tour in Palestine the Jews have not persecuted the Arabs, and instead of the Arabs being driven out they have actually increased in numbers since the Balfour declaration; that the Jews paid for every inch of the ground that they occupy; that the Jewish hospitals are open to the Arabs; that the Jews help to maintain Arab schools; that the Arabs live longer because of modern medical science introduced by the Jews; that Arabs are richer because of the aggressive business methods of the Jews; that Arabs are wiser because of the schools built by the Jews; that Arabs are happier because the standards of living have been raised by the Jews; and if these two peoples were left alone and if it were not for outside agitation they would get along together. The majority of both peoples believe they can live together. Why shouldn’t this be the case? Palestine is not the only land where there is more than one nation and more than one religion. We get along here in America, and we have all the races and religions of the world.
The greatest tragedy of this hour is the Anti-semitic craze in many of the nations of the earth. Surely the heads of these governments and peoples have not read: “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee:” (Gen. 12:3.)
NORRIS-RILEY DISCUSSION OF THE JEWISH QUESTION
DID THE JEWS WRITE THE PROTOCOLS, A CONSPIRACY TO DESTROY CIVILIZATON?

Dr. W. B. Riley Makes the Astounding Charge That Joseph the Son of Jacob Was the Author and Founder of Modern Bolshevism
Dr. Riley has done a great work. In his address charging the Jews as authors – “Protocols and Communism”, as published by him – herewith is the verbatim language of the charge against Joseph:
“The text selected for this discourse is a straightforward story of Joseph’s administration of government affairs in Egypt; and it will be noted, in passing, that he proved himself a true son of his father, Jacob, keeping an eye to the first chance for his own, securing for his blood kin Goshen, the best of all the land, and, while enriching them, he made a political move that stripped every Egyptian of all he had; his land, his horses, cattle, sheep, and converted him into a government slave, to be driven according to the pleasure of the potentate on the throne.
“Strangely enough, after 4,000 years the whole world is facing a repetition of this Egyptian experience. New Josephs have arisen who threaten the overthrow of all free peoples, and the whole plan, if successful, will enable them to cash in on the world chaos and become themselves the prime ministers of the earth.” Dr. Riley says:
Page 4, “But the comparison of the procedure of Joseph in Egypt and ‘the Protocol’ plan, is interesting to say the least, and worthy of careful consideration.”
Again Dr. Riley says:
Page 10, “IN JOSEPH’S DAY THE EGYPTIANS HAD TO SURRENDER OR DIE! When they had given up all their chattels and nothing remained to them but their land and their lives, they came back to offer both for the privilege of a slave existence; and, mark you, the offer was what Joseph had planned and expected, and he instantly closed the bargain.
“The most outstanding piece of stupidity, that I have ever seen, is the present attitude of the working classes toward the Communistic philosophy.”
Page 11, “Senator Walsh, Regent of the School of Foreign Service, on May 5th, 1934, openly charged ‘The third Internationale of Russia’ with breaking their word to the President, by cabling to the Communists of the United States to renew activities in factories and among the working classes. The Minneapolis and Toledo and Shoremen strikes, with their brutal murders, were the immediate result!”
DR. RILEY ACCUSES JOSEPH A “BOLSHEVIK”
Page 16, “Time has a marvelous way of avenging wrongs. The Jews that Joseph exalted to Bolshevik positions and to whom he subjected the Egyptian people at first, were finally seen by a new Pharaoh as equally capable of yielding a return to his rapacious maw, and so he enslaved them, took property from them, cracked the whip over them, and made them to become the further mediums of his insatiable greed. It is so now with Stalin in Russia. It will be so again!”
On the Bolsheviki reign of Premier Joseph, in an address published in “The Pilot,” the official organ of the Northwestern Bible School, is an address entitled “Bloodless but Red,” Dr. Riley writes and publishes the following:
“When the Bolsheviki reign that Premier Joseph, the Jew, established in Egypt, subjecting every native to slavery, produced its natural revolt, and revolution, causing the Jewish rulers to become slaves themselves, driven daily to brickmaking without straw, judgment, against the land, was God’s decision.”
DR. J. FRANK NORRIS REPLIES
The Protocols are documents that set forth a scheme and conspiracy to destroy this present civilization. The authorship is charged to the Jews or the Elders of Zion. They were written twenty years ago. The court at Berne, Switzerland, and the Swiss courts are the fairest courts in the world, vindicated the Jews of this wicked charge. The flimsy argument advanced by the enemies of the Jews that because things prophesied in the Protocols are coming to pass, therefore it is proof that the Jews wrote them, and should be exterminated. On that basis the bones of Isaiah should be dug up, for 2600 years ago, in one chapter – the 24th chapter of Isaiah he prophesied the destruction of civilization. So did Jeremiah make the same prophesy and so did Zephaniah, and so did the other Prophets and so did Jesus Christ Himself prophesy the doom of this civilization.
This address of Dr. Riley making Joseph the agent of the devil and attacking the Jews was delivered in the First Baptist Church, Fort Worth, and I answered it the following Sunday night. The book entitled, “Did the Jews write the Protocols?”, is the reply to the charge that Joseph is the founder of Bolshevism and that the Jews wrote the infamous Protocols.
If Joseph was the agent of the devil as pictured by Dr. Riley and the founder of the most infamous system of government known in the annals of time, the “Bolshevik government”, why has he been held up by all classes and all faiths as the most ideal character for the youth throughout all ages?
If Joseph was such a character how can the following scriptures be explained?
Instead of being the agent of the devil he was God’s specially appointed ambassador.
Genesis 39:2, “And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.”
Genesis 39:21, “But the Lord was with Joseph, and showed him mercy, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.”
Genesis 39:23, “The keeper of the prison looked not to anything that was under his hand, because the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper.”
Genesis 42:18, “And Joseph said unto them, the third day, This do and live, for I fear God.”
Genesis 45:7-8, “And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance, so now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and Lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.”
Genesis 50:20, “But as for you, ye thought evil against me: but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.”
Instead of holding up Joseph as a type of the Anti-Christ, he has been regarded throughout the ages as a most perfect type of Christ Himself.
It is well nigh blasphemy to charge the work of Joseph to an evil motive, to the devil himself, when the word of God very plainly declares that it was the brethren of Joseph that were evil conspirators.
Acts 7:9-10, “And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt; but God was with him, and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.”
Showing further that the Christian character of Joseph was rewarded, Hebrews 11:22, “By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.”
The far-fetched and unscriptural charge that Joseph was the arch Bolshevik of all times, is an example of the cruel and wicked attack made on the Jews at the present time and the Anti-Semitic Crusade is un-Biblical, un-American, un-Christian, and therefore unjust.
NO DEFENSE OF THE JEWS
The Jew needs no defense, even as the Bible itself needs no defense.
My plea is not for the sake of the Jew, but for our own sakes; and the strangest of all strange things is that any Christian should lift his hand against the Jew, knowing the Bible pronounces a severe curse on every hand that has been lifted against this peculiar people, and pronounces a blessing upon every hand that blesses this people.
What a slander to call them “Christ-killers!” A half truth is the worst lie, and our New Testament plainly declares that all the powers of earth were involved in His death, and that it was a part of the pre-determinate counsel of Almighty God:
“For of a truth against Thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, for to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.” (Acts 4:27, 28.)
Therefore, if there is any one thing that as Christians we need to know and to observe, it is the truth as set forth in our own New Testament.
Why not take the attitude of the inspired apostle Paul concerning the Jew?
“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been His counsellor? Or who hath first given to Him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.” (Rom. 11:33-36.)
And as we approach this Christmas time, the time that was celebrated by the angels in Judaea when they sang:
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men,” why not let the forked tongue of criticism and venomous hate be stilled and sit at the feet of the greatest Jew that ever lived. He whom we call Christ and worship as our Messiah?
THE JEW IS THE KEY THAT UNLOCKS FOUR MYSTERIES
If you want to understand the Bible, you study God’s dealing with the Jews. He is the key that unlocks four things:
First, the mysteries of divine revelation in both the Old and the New Testament. The Bible was written by the Jew, inspired of God. You cannot understand the Divine purpose in this world unless you understand His purpose in dealing with and through the Jew.
Second, the philosophy of history. If you want to understand the strange things in human history, he is the key that unlocks the past. If you want to understand how God raises up and how He puts down rulers, kings, emperors and empires and nations, you study His dealings with the Jews. If you want to understand the destiny and fate of ancient Egypt and Babylon and all ancient nations, you study God’s dealing with the Jew.
Third, the only explanation of the present map of the world. If you want to understand the strange happenings of this present hour, I say to you he is the key that unlocks the mystery of things that are going on now. If you want to understand Turkey, the Near East – if you want to understand the politics of all Europe – you understand God’s dealings with the Jew.
The only outstanding result of the great war, the only clear-cut result was what? Not indemnity, not reparations, for that isn’t settled – they are fighting over it still – the world is trembling in the balance, wondering whether we will be plunged into another war, but one thing was clearly settled and that is that Turkish and Mohammedan rule ended in Palestine and that country was given back to its rightful owners-the people that God gave it to in the beginning.
Fourth, if you want to understand the future, he is the key that unlocks the unknown future. Great as his history has been in the past-as related as it has been to the nations of the earth – the greatest purpose that God has yet for the Jew is yet in the future. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem” – every Jew has it in his blood – that his right hand would lose its cunning and his tongue would cleave to the roof of his mouth before he would forget Jerusalem – that city – the most important city in all the past and of the present and of the future-from that city in the future the law shall go forth to the end of the earth-the religious capital of the world in the past and will be the religious capital in the day of Millennial glory.
The Bible says, Isa. 2:1-5: The word that Isaiah, the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
“And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
“And many people shall go and say, ‘Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
“And He shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not ift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”
“O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord.”
ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLES AND JEWS HAVE COMMON INTERESTS
Now, I want to address myself briefly on this word: Why then should there be any enmity or prejudice between the Jews and the English-speaking people? There should be the closest sympathetic relationship between these two mighty races. After all, the Jew may not be so different himself, and we may not be so different from him. Shakespeare says: “Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passion? Fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as the Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die, and if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, shall not we resemble you in that?”
I will tell you what you do – you go to persecuting him and you are digging your own grave. He isn’t going to bother you, no – he isn’t going to fight you back. No – he won’t burn your house down; he won’t shoot you in the back – no – no danger of that; he isn’t going to do that – but you lay your hand on him and God will put His curse upon you – that is what He says – I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee.” Is the Bible inspired? Let’s take that first promise the Abrahamic covenant – God says I will bless him that blesses the. Everywhere you find a people blessing and helping the Jew in ancient times – take for example – what happened at Jericho – the city was destroyed but the scarlet woman with her household was saved, and why? Because she gave protection and succor to the Spies of Israel.
Yonder in the land of Egypt for 400 years they were ground down by cruel, heartless, conscienceless taskmasters. Go and look upon those splendid rows of Pyramids and the Sphinx, as I did this summer. They are now excavating tombs with their millions of wealth buried through the centuries. Go yonder in Central Park, New York, and look at the obelisk that was taken from the ancient city of Memphis, a few miles out of present Cairo – look at it with those hieroglyphics on the four sides. That obelisk tells Americans, that the people who persecuted the Jew, that their glory is buried in the sands on the banks of the Nile, and the Jew lives on. Come with me to the ruins of Babylon where they dug up the cuneiform records, where they have excavated the history of old Nebuchadnezzar-what does it mean – that this people – this government – this empire – that took these people into captivity and stole their golden and silver vessels from the temple and drank out of them as they held them in their blasphemous hands at the midnight hour – that nation went down in defeat and their city was so utterly destroyed that it is a place for bats and owls and for satyrs to dance?
But the Jew lives on!
Go yonder some moonlight night and look through the open windows of the old Coliseum at Rome, see the half broken walls, and listen to those strange voices from the dead past – what does it mean – Rome, that mighty power that oppressed and persecuted the Jews, went down in defeat.
But the Jew lives on!
Call to mind the conquerors that have invaded the Land of Palestine – Where are they? Thotmes, Nebuchadnezzar, Sennacherib, Cambyses, Alexander, Pompey, Caesar, Augustus, Titus, Hadrian, Omar, Saladin, Tamerlane, Napoleon – all gone – governments and empires – but the Jew remains the same unchangeable race that he was when God gave the covenant to his forefathers.
Go to the land of Russia – the land of night, mystery and bloodshed. For three hundreds years the Romanoff Dynasty persecuted the Jews and sent them into cold Siberia to die in exile.
Who knows but that the 15,000,000 human beings that have been “liquidated” in the last twenty years in Russia, is the just retribution on that land – a fulfillment of the judgment, “I will curse him that curseth thee”?
Germany will change. I spent some time in Germany this summer and talked to all classes and the great body of the people of Germany are opposed to persecuting the Jews. Hitler will change, or he will get changed. Haman issued a decree, sealed and signed by the king of the world’s most powerful empire in that day, that the Jews should be put to death.
“And the letters were sent by posts into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey.” (Esther 3:13.)
But the hand of God changed the decree of the king and caused it to read: “So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai.” (Esther 7:10.)
The Jew will be here until the end of time. Did Jesus know what He was talking about? There is a miracle for you. Now come on, you professors of science, of ethnology, and tell me how that happened! Here is a people that is defying climatic conditions, social conditions, political conditions, flood and flame and four thousand years of persecution, still true to the God of their fathers.
I repeat, I make no defense of the Jew. He needs none, and would justly resent it, but I make a plea for our own Christian faith, for our own Bible.
As a Christian I fear God; I believe in His Word, and He says, “I will bless them that bless thee and curse him that curses thee,” and this applies to the Jew wherever he is, whether in Palestine or elsewhere. We need to listen to the inspired prophets when they declare:
“Israel is holy to the Lord, the first of its produce, all who desire to destroy it shall be found guilty, evil shall befall them.”
“Whoever touches My people, shall touch his own eye-apple.”
“The Lord never changes, and you, the house of Israel shall never be destroyed.”
“You are my witnesses and I am your God.”
“Like the new heaven and the new earth, Israel shall stand forever before me.,”
“If the heavens will be measured above and the foundations of the earth will be searched out, Israel will cease to be a people before me.”
THE MIRACLE OF THE JEW
Let me emphasize the miracle of the Jew. Let me summarize for a moment. The miracle of all times is the Jew. Can the world show anything like it? More than twice 1,900 years old, they saw the proud Egyptian perish in the waters of the Red Sea; they heard the fall of great Babylon’s power; they witnessed the ruins of the Macedonian conquests. And now they have outlived the Caesars, and outlived the dark ages. They have been through all civilizations, shared in all convulsions, and have kept pace with the entire progress of discovery and art. And here they stand today, as distinct as ever, occupying no country of their own, scattered through all countries, identical in their immemorial physiognomy, earth’s men of destiny, before the venerableness of whose pedigree the proudest scutcheons of mankind are but trifles of yesterday. But have they suffered severely ? One convulsive groan of agony breathing through nineteen centuries, and heard in every land but our own.
At the siege of Jerusalem by Titus, besides the tens of thousands led into captivity, it was as if in a single action of a great war the slain on one side should amount to 1,300,000; and when the remaining Jews having been expelled from their country, they attempted, sixty years afterward, to return, a half million more were slaughtered. For centuries they were forbidden, on pain of death, even to set foot in Jerusalem. Under King John of England, 1,500 were massacred at York in one day. Under Ferdinand and Isabella 800,000 by a single decree, were forced out to sea in boats, and the most of them perished in the waves. They have been fined and fleeced by almost every government known to history. They have been banished from place to place; banished and recalled, and banished again.
Here they are holding fast to that one tell-tale face, keeping up the sacred learnings of their traditions, self-conscious in their isolation, irrepressible in their love of Jerusalem, sublime in their singular patriotism, evermore looking and longing for their Messiah, the same intense individuality as when, lord of the soil, he plucked his olives from the trees of Judaea. And, what is more, these world wanderers of the centuries, these tribes of the weary foot, have not only survived, but have risen again as an element of power among mankind.
However much oppressed, persecuted and crushed to earth, the Jew rises again. Carry them into Babylonian captivity and soon they are prime ministers, cup bearers to the king, presidents of the councils of the empire. This has been true through the ages, and England’s greatest constructive statesman was Disraeli. No Jewish ruler has ever persecuted any race or minorities, Nor did any Jew ever attempt to force unwilling subjects to embrace his faith. Therefore, shall the Jew be hated, envied and persecuted because he is the foremost, whether in science or literature or government?
In witchery of song unsurpassed, he enchants the world with some of the sweetest music it ever heard. Surely he is the standing miracle of the world’s current history; the bush of Moses, ever burning, yet never consumed; an ocular demonstration of how God may energize the secret springs of a peoples’ life, yet without disturbing individual freedom or social characteristics; an unanswerable refutation of that godless philosophy that would turn the Almighty out of His own universe. And for what have they thus been borne in the hands of God, all along the ages? Beyond a peradventure, if so literally have been fulfilled the prophecies which foretold their sufferings and their preservation, equally sure are the predicted grandeurs of their future.
THE SPURIOUS AND FRAUDULENT PROTOCOLS
I confess my amazement that certain intelligent outstanding Fundamentalists have joined in this age-long and divinely cursed persecution. One of the outstanding Fundamentalists of this hour has published many things that are nothing short of amazing. For instance, once he published that Joseph is a type of the anti-Christ. It is nothing short of amazing that so great a man would fall into the error of making Joseph a type of the worst character of all times. Surely he has forgotten that concerning Joseph it is said: “And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God.” (Gen. 42:8.)
And surely he has forgotten these words: “And the Lord was with Joseph and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.” (Gen. 39:2.)
THE SLANDER OF THE PROTOCOLS
How true are the words of James 3:5, “Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!”
They are supposed to be genuine records of a conspiracy to destroy all existing Governments and Social orders, and to build upon their ruins a “Super-Government” that will subject all the nations of the world under it. The new State is to be of, by and for the people in the plot. The scheme is to be carried to success by creating unrest among the working classes, and rebellion among the common people generally against all government, cause chaos in every department of life among the Nations both internally and internationally, until the whole world will be in upheaval and chaos, and that will result in the overthrow of all present political order. Upon the ashes of the old will be built that new “Super-Government” that will rule the new world. Communism as created in Russia is to be the weapon by which the conspirators are to bring about this world-wide revolution. In order to accomplish their devilish end, nothing must be stopped at, and everything necessary must be stooped to, no matter how much destruction of life and wealth may be required. Of course, neither life nor the property of the plotters, nor that belonging to their people will suffer. It is to be bloodless revolution as far as they are concerned, but the bloodiest in so far as it will touch the rest of the world they are seeking to destroy.
No answer is needed to this slander. The very absurdity of the charge is sufficient to deny any credence.
DID THE JEW WRITE THE PROTOCOLS?
There are three classes of Jews, (1) Orthodox, (2) Reform, (3) Atheistic.
First. The orthodox Jew makes up the vast majority of the Jewish race. He is not interested in an Empire, but in THE KINGDOM OF THE MESSIAH with the Messiah, the “Son of David” on the throne in “Eretz Israel” – the land of Israel – and “The Holy City – Jerusalem – as the “City of the King’. If all the nations on earth should offer to the Orothodox Jew a world Kingdom with the throne anywhere outside of Jerusalem, such voluntary offer would positively be declined. The coming and reign oft the Messiah is his hope! If that hope could be taken from him he would be utterly hopeless. Every morning of his life the Orthodox Jew recites thirteen articles of faith, and one of them reads as follows: I believe with a whole (hearted) belief that the Messiah cometh. the Son of David; and though He tarrieth, yet will I wait for Him.” There may be some sayings of the Rabbis in the Talmud that are not founded on Scripture, but there is nothing “criminal” in it. Hence, the Talmudic (Orthodox) Jew is not criminal, and the crimes plotted according to the Protocols cannot be attributed to the Orthodox majority of the Jewish Race.
Second. In the second place the Reform Jew is not guilty of the protocols. A Christian minister once asked a Jew on a train this question:
“What is the difference between an orthodox Jew and a reform Jew?”
And the Jew replied instantly.
“Ten thousand dollars.”
The reform Jew is to Judaism what the modernist is to Christianity.
How inconsistent to charge the reform Jew with the authorship of the protocols and at the same time charge the Jew as “greedy” – “money mad,” and forging a weapon to destroy himself.
For the reform Jew to advocate the destruction of civilization as plotted by the “Wise Elders of Zion” would be to charge an intelligent group of people with such stupidity as has never been known in the history of the world. If the present economic system should be destroyed, then all the wealth of the Jews goes down with it. So, therefore you cannot lay the protocols at the door of the reform Jew.
Third. Would the Atheistic Jew write the Protocols? The answer is he would not, for the following reasons:
1. The atheistic Jew like the atheistic Gentile is not a nationalist, especially if you link the atheist with communism. The plot of the protocols is strictly a nationalistic scheme.
2. In the second place the atheistic Jew does not believe there is a God; and the protocols speak of God again and again.
3. In the third place the atheistic Jew does not consider himself as of a specially “chosen nation” which the authors of the protocols repeatedly claim for themselves. The atheistic Jew scoffs at the Idea of a “Messiah” or of the “Son of David” or a “Jewish state” which is the part of the scheme of the “Wise Elders of Zion.” So therefore, there is not only no evidence that the Jews wrote the protocols, but there is every reason and argument why it was impossible for them to have been the authors of the protocols.
When a Jew becomes a communist he ceases to be a Jew, for every communist is an atheist. Karl Marx was born a Jew and became an atheist, and the worst anti-semitic of his time. Many people believe that the Jews run the Soviet government of Russia, but the facts are of the 56 commissars only 3 out of 56 are Jews, and the most prominent of these three, Litvinoff is now being eliminated or headed for the “blood purge.”
Trotsky is a Jew but he was exiled from Russia.
There are communistic Jews just like there are communistic Gentiles. Communism is not a Jewish question. It is an economic problem, a political issue, and communism knows no race, creed or color; there are communists in America and communists in China; there are communists in Russia and communists in England; there are communists in Germany and in France.
“To the law and to the testimony” – Face the facts, there never was such an organization as the “Wise Men of Zion.” This clearly, legally and unmistakably brought out in open court, and to all fair minded people that would be sufficient answer to this slander.
The protocols were written by a Russian monk by the name of Nilus in 1917, who claimed he received the manuscript from a Russian Nobleman by the name of Sukhotin, who in turn obtained the manuscript from a lady whose name is not given, and a Russian noblewoman, who in turn, according to Sukhotin obtained the manuscript from the Russian Minister of Interior.
Nilus was an employee of the Russian Police Department of the Okhrana, connected with the church, especially relating to “foreign religions.”
PROTOCOLS FORGED BY RUSSIAN BLACK HUNDRED TO SAVE THRONE OF CZAR
The Black Hundred of Russia instigated the writing of this spurious document depicting a conspiracy by Jews against the governments of the world, and against the Christian religion. And Nilus, a former Monk, was made the father thereof. Shortly after their publication the pogroms as planned were staged and thousands of Jews were murdered and Kishinev was written in letters of blood on the darkest sky of the world.
The Christian nations looked in horror upon these tragedies. The conscience of humanity was shocked. American people petitioned the Czar of all Russia to stay these persecutions.
PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT MADE PROTEST TO CZAR
President Theodore Roosevelt, with every means of investigation at his command, and a man who was not afraid of public opinion, who was subject to the influence of no race or faction, but a friend to all men, sent the protest petition from the American people through the diplomatic channels to the Czar.
He refused to receive same and the President of the United States ordered the petition to be placed permanently in the archives of this country. There this petition remains as a monument to the lofty humanitarian endeavor of the American people.
“PROTOCOLS” AN ANCIENT SCHEME TO PERSECUTE THE JEWS
Changing the name does not change the character.
History is full of examples of the “protocols” – forged and trumped up charges accusing the Jews of attempting to overthrow the government.
The first instance you find in the inspired Bible, Exodus 1:10, “Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.”
And another instance in the inspired record, of the “protocols,” is in the book of Esther 3:6, “Wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even to the people of Mordecai.”
Another Bible example of the “protocols” was when the Jews were driven from Rome, (“Because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome.” Acts18:2.)
And through the centuries there have been many similar and cruel examples of the “protocols.”
In the Middle Ages when all Europe was smitten by the scourge of Black Death it was charged that theJews, in conspiracy with the lepers of the world, poisoned the wells of Europe. The victims of this hallucination were numbered by the thousands. It never occurred to the people that the Jews were drinking the water from these wells the same as all the other townsmen and villagers and that the Jews died from this terrible scourge just as the others did.
THE “PROTOCOLS” IN GERMANY
The Hitler persecution is the latest example of the “protocols.” Germany was defeated in the war, bankrupt, going through one revolution after another. There were 600,000 Jews in a population of 65,000,000 and the Nazis started the propaganda that this less than one per cent of the population of Germany brought about its wreck and ruin, and as a result, the most terrible persecution of the ages is now going on in Germany.
THE SAME CHARACTER OF ACCUSATIONS WERE MADE MANY CENTURIES AGO AGAINST THE CHRISTIANS
Nero burned Rome and fiddled while it was burning. He laid the crime at the door of the Christians and the first great persecution of the Christians took place at the instigation of bloody Nero.
The great Latin Father, Tertullian, wrote as to the very same accusation directed against the Christians:
“On the other hand, the same name may properly be given to those who join to hate the good and honest, who shout for the blood of the innocent, who use as a pretext to defend their hatred the absurdity that they take the Christians to be the cause of every disaster to the State, of every misfortune of the people. If the Tiber reaches the walls, if the Nile does not rise to the fields, if the sky doesn’t move or the earth does, if there is famine, if there is plague, the cry is at once: “The Christians to the lions!”
Augustine in “The City of God,” says: “Pluvia defit, causa Christiani sunt.” (There is a shortage of rain, surely the Christians are the cause of it.)
Concerning the blood accusation against the early Christians, a classic passage from Tertullian’s “Apologeticus,” Chapter IX, is of value:
“Let your error blush before the Christians, for we do not include even animals’ blood in our natural diet. We abstain on that account from things strangled or that die of themselves, that we may not in any way be polluted by blood, even if it is buried in the meat. Finally, when you are testing Christians, you offer them sausages full of blood; you are thoroughly well aware, of course, that among them it is forbidden; but you want to make them transgress. Now, I ask you, what sort of a thing is it, that when you are confident they will turn with horror from animals’ blood, you should suppose them greedy for human blood-unless perhaps you yourselves have found it sweeter?”
The accusation against the early Christians of Rome in the second and third centuries is clearly visualized when we read Octavius, by Minucius Felix. The accusations here summarized were current against Christians in the Roman Empire. I am quoting from Chapter VIII, paragraph 3, and Chapter IX, paragraphs 1-6.
“Is it not then deplorable that a gang excuse my vehemence in using strong language for the cause I advocate-a gang, I say, of discredited and proscribed desperadoes band themselves against the gods? Fellows who gather together, illiterates from the dregs of the populace and credulous women with the instability natural to their sex, and so organize a rabble of profane conspirators, leagued together by meetings at night and ritual fasts and unnatural repasts, not for any sacred service but for piacular rites, a secret tribe that shuns the light, silent in the open, but talkative in hid corners; they despise temples as if they were tombs; they spit upon the gods; they jeer at our sacred rites; pitiable themselves, they pity our priests; they despise titles and robes of honor going themselves half-naked! What a pitch of folly! what wild impertinence! present tortures they despise, yet dread those of an uncertain future; death after death they fear, but death in the present they fear not; for them illusive hope charms away terror with assurances of a life to come.****
“Already – for ill weeds grow apace – decay of morals grows from day to day, and throughout the wide world the abominations of this impious confederacy multiply. Root and branch it must be exterminated as accursed. They recognize one another by secret signs and marks; they fall in love almost before they are acquainted; everywhere they introduce a kind of religion of lust, a promiscuous brotherhood’ and ‘sisterhood’ by which ordinary fornication, under cover of a hallowed name, is converted to incest. And thus their vain and foolish superstition makes an actual boast of crime. For themselves, were there not some foundation of truth, shrewd rumor would not impute gross and unmentionable forms of vice. I am told that under some idiotic impulse they consecrate and worship the head of an ass, the meanest of all beasts, a religion worthy of the morals which gave it birth.****
“To say that a malefactor put to death for his crimes, and wood of the death-dealing cross, are objects of their veneration is to assign fitting altars to abandoned wretches and the kind of worship they deserve. Details of the initiation of neophytes are as revolting as they are notorious. An infant, cased in dough to deceive the unsuspecting, is placed beside the person to be initiated. The novice is thereupon induced to inflict what seems to be harmless blows upon the dough, and unintentionally the infant is killed by his unsuspecting blows; the blood – oh, horrible – they lap up greedily; the limbs they tear to pieces eagerly; and over the victim they make league and covenant, and complicity in guilt pledge themselves to mutual silence.”
These accusations against the Christians were no more truthful than the same accusations against the Jews today.
“I HATE EVERY JEW”.
This is what a very dear friend of mine said to me one day while riding on the train, and he is an active Christian worker.
I was shocked and said: “How can you hate anybody, being a Christian?”
“Do you not know that the sixty-six books in the Bible were written by Jews?”
“Do you know that Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel were all Jews?”
“That the twelve apostles were Jews?”
“That the Apostle Paul was a Jew?”
“That our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ was a Jew?”
“Well,” he said, “of course, I didn’t mean that.”
A short time ago one of the most distinguished lawyers of America and I were at a luncheon, and he said: “Norris, I have it from reliable sources that the Jews are back of this depression and that they brought it about in order to get control of everything. They tell me that they have records of documents where a bunch of Jews got together and planned the present debacle.”
When I answered the “They say” he expressed his delight to know that it was a part of the age-long conspiracy against the Jews.
When I was 19 years of age in the University, I delivered an address in defense of Captain Dreuyfus of France, who as you know was exiled in disgrace. I won a medal in the debate on this issue. Years afterwards Captain Dreuyfus was restored, but the damage was done.
When I returned from Palestine in 1920 upon the invitation of the Jews of Fort Worth, I delivered an address on the Davidic Covenant, and I shall never forget until my last day the very tender atmosphere of that great occasion. I did not believe then, and I do not believe now, and I never will believe that those, my neighbors, my life-long friends, the friends of my youth, were enemies to this Government, or would have any part or lot in its overthrow.
A JEW SAVED THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
We worship at the shrine of George Washington, as the father of our country, “First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.” But behind George Washington was a Jew by the name of Haym Salomon, who is called the “forgotten man of American history.”
During the dark days of Valley Forge and throughout the American Revolution was this quiet Jew. He died at the young age of only 49. He raised the “sinews of war.” He came to this country from Poland with those distinguished patriots Count Casimir Pulaski and Thaddeus Kosciusko. He gave his fortune and not until now has it ever been remembered. Everyone of the 130,000,000 Americans that enjoy the protecting folds of the red, white and blue, owe a debt to Haym Salomon. The last four Presidents pay him the following tribute:
WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT: “…a man entitled to the gratitude of the entire country.”
CALVIN COOLIDGE: “There is romance in the story of Haym Salomon, Polish Jew, financier of the Revolution. . .
“He negotiated for Robert Morris all the loans raised in France and Holland, pledged his personal faith and fortune for enormous amounts, and personally advanced large sums to such men as James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, Baron Steuben, General St. Clair, and many other patriot leaders, who testified that without his aid they could not have carried on in the cause.”
HERBERT HOOVER: “The noble and disinterested public services of Haym Salomon deserve the undying gratitude of all Americans. The aid of his financial genius and his wealth was of critical importance in the Revolutionary struggle which created us a nation.”
FRANKLIN D. RO0SEVELT: “He, undoubtedly, was a great patriot and rendered fine and unselfish service to the land of his adoption – Our Nation.”
On the rolls of American arms appear the names of many Jewish officers and men. Manuel Mordecai Noah was a staff oficer with Francis Marion, the intrepid leader known as “the Swamp Fox.” Jacob Leon and Benjamin Moses were staff officers with Count Pulaski. When General DeKalb fell at Camden, three Jewish officers bore him from the field of battle. Asser Levy, son of that Asser Levy who defied the tyranny of Peter Stuyvesant, was a distinguished officer in a New Jersey regiment. Of forty-six Jews belonging to a single civilian organization, twenty-four became high officers with the American armies.
NOT MARCONI BUT A JEW BY THE NAME OF HEINRICH RUDOLF HERTZ WAS THE DISCOVERER OF THE WIRELESS
The New York Times, March 25th, this year, published the following:
“VATICAN CITY, March 25. – Pope Pius has sent what the Vatican describes as a ‘generous money grant’ to the family of the famous German scientist, Heinrich Rudolf Hertz, whose discoveries were the forerunner of wireless and whose widow and two daughters fled from Germany some time ago to England and now live there in dire want.
“Herr Hertz was a Jew, though from Aryan stock. His widow and two daughters are Protestants. They lived for some time at Bonn on a modest pension until Nazi molestations drove them to Britain, where they are without resources.
“The Pope’s gesture was much commented on in Rome, where it was unanimously interpreted as a slap to Germany. The head of a Christian religion, it is pointed out, has shown himself to be more charitable toward a Protestant family of a Jew than the government of the country to which it belongs, and in so doing again underlined his profound aversion to the racial and religious theories of the Nazis.

Dr. C. Gordon Brownville, of Tremont Temple, Boston, Mass. says:
“Those who are anti-Semitic need to remind themselves that if they will be logical in their thoughts, and acts, and continue to claim that the Jew has never given any benefit to civilization then they must be willing to dispense with all benefits coming from Jews. May I suggest that in your physical ailments it will be necessary for you to eliminate many medical discoveries which have been made by the Jew. Dr. Lukatchewsky, a non-Jewish medical man would remind you that a Jew hater who has heart disease must not use digitalis, which comes from the Jew Ludwig Traube. If he has a toothache he will not use cocaine, or he will be benefited by the work of the Jew, Solomon Strickler. Typhus must not be treated, or he will benefit by the discoveries of the Jews, Badal and Weill. If he has diabetes he must not use insulin, because of the research work of the Jew, Minkowsky. If he has a headache he must shun pyramidon and antipyrin, which were given by the Jews, Spiro and Eilege. Anti-Semites who have convulsions must put up with them, for it was the Jew, Oscar Leibreich, who thought of chloral-hydrat. Anti-Semite doctors must jettison all discoveries and improvements by the Nobel prize men, Volitzer, Barangaj, Warburg: the dermatologist, Jaddessohn, Bruno Bloch, Unna, the Neurologists, Mendle, Oppenheim, Kronecker, Beenedikt; the lung specialist Faenkel, of the surgeon Israel, the anatomist Henle, and many other eminent men like Ehrlich Wasserman and Neisser. What has been said in regard to the contribution of Jews in the Science of Medicine could be repeated in regard to every Science known to the human race.”
Though I could call the roll of a long list of patriotic Jews, scientists, men who have relieved human suffering, as for example Wasser who discovered the successful serum for that dreadful disease of syphilis known as the Wasser remedy 606. In naming this large number of outstanding, patriotic Jews, there is one that I can never forget.
Unfortunately my father was given to drink. There was no Christmas in our home, there was no laughter, no song. Other little children were happy, but we were sad. One cold desolate winter day Maudie, the baby, when six months of age, was snatched away. We were among strangers in the city of Birmingham, Alabama. There was none to help, but I shall never forget an old, white whiskered, hump-shouldered man, who came in that hour of darkness and death. He and his wife provided the shroud for the little baby. He brought in the little white casket, dug the grave and let it down.
They came often with their help.
And he was a Jew!
ALL TOTALITARIAN STATES IRRELIGIOUS AND DESTROY RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
It is high time that the whole religious world was aroused to the menace at our door.
All totalitarian states are irreligious whether communist, Fascist, Naziist, or any other brand of dictatorship. They reduce man to a chattel, a pawn. The individual exists for the state and not the state for the individual. Religious persecution in Germany and in other countries does not stop with denying religious freedom to the Jews, but destroys religious freedom of all faiths, and as the night follows the day if religious freedom is destroyed, freedom of the press goes, the right of citizenship goes, and the right to own property goes, and we pass under an atheistic and absolute cruel despotism.
THE REMEDY
There is but one remedy, and that remedy is set forth in the Word of God. What America needs is an old fashioned heaven sent revival, and all the conditions justify us in believing that we are right at the eve of the greatest spiritual awakening of all times.
We need to come back again and preach in every place of worship on II Chronicles 7:14, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
America needs to come to Mount Carmel and hear the greatest prayer of the Old Testament – only 63 words, prayed at a time of great drouth when the whole nation had left the true worship of Jehovah and bowed down to the altars of Baal, “Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their hearts back again.” (I Kings 18:36-37.)
America needs to come back to the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and of Israel – “Where is the God of Elijah?”

“My dear Mr. President: –
“All true patriots endorse your firm manner of handling the Japanese crisis. At this time when the nation and the world should be listening to the song of Bethlehem, we are threatened with war. Not only so, but the nation is threatened with mounting unemployment and distress.
“Therefore this nation whose Lord is the God of the Universe, will welcome a proclamation from you calling for a day of prayer.
“Many of your predecessors issued such a proclamation calling on the people of various faiths to assemble in their respective places of worship for humility and prayer.
“George Washington issued such a proclamation. In the dark days of the sixties Abraham Lincoln sent forth an appeal for prayer, so did Woodrow Wilson when Prussian militarism was threatening, the whole world. The Lord God of heaven and earth commanded the wisest man that ever lived: If my people, which are called by, my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
